Ri Kohran

[ fertility, peace, nature, earth ]

Background :

Kohran was born into a rather well-to-do family, on March of 1906. Her father was a successful trader and he loved to take apart mechanical things to see how they worked. Kohran inherited this love of machines as well. Fortunately for Kohran, her father travelled widely, so he often brought back a lot of information about new scientific advances to his inquisitive daughter.

Kohran's family was tragically killed during a bandit raid on her village, when a blazing fire razed the whole place to the ground. The young girl was left to wander all by herself for some time. She was eventually adopted into another family, but she was forced to work her way through like a slave for many years.

Kohran's two main passions in life are airplanes and inventions. Almost all of her time is spent tinkering around with some device or other. Oddly enough, she seems to have the uncanny knack of turning anything, no matter how harmless, into an explosive device. Her most prized possession is a pocket watch which was given to her by her father before he died (thankfully, that's the only thing that hasn't blown up yet). In China, she would spend hours every night taking the watch apart and then lovingly putting it back together again. Given the poor lighting conditions in which this kind of work was done, her eyesight degraded quickly.

In 1921, Kohran met Fujieda Ayame in Beijing. Soon after, she decided to follow the woman to Japan to join the Teikoku Kagekidan. She was first posted in the Hanayashiki branch to lend assistance to the development of koubu technology. Then, at the age of 17, she was finally transferred to the Imperial Theatre to prepare the koubu units there for actual battle.

Personality :

About the best way one can possibly describe Kohran is that she is like a mad scientist who lacks any desire to dominate the world. While most of her inventions can seem pretty ingenious and revolutionary, they almost always end their lives by blowing up in her face.

Upon her arrival in Japan, Kohran spent much of her initial time in Osaka. Consequently, Kohran speaks in a very distinct Kansai dialect. While in Osaka, she was placed under the care of Percy Howard, an eccentric English inventor. She blossomed under his tutelage, adopting many of the man's quirky mannerisms for her own, and even thinks of him as her second father.

Open and friendly, Kohran is a very easy person to talk to. She always has a good word to say to her friends. She spends the bulk of her time within the headquarters maintaining and upgrading the koubu, often speaking to and treating the giant steam hulks with much affection. She is very close to Yoneda -- she regards him as her third father. She and Sakakibara Yuri have known each other for some time, having met when Kohran first arrived at the Hanayashiki branch prior to joining the Hanagumi.

Besides working on her inventions, she also loves to play cards and regularly challenges Oogami to a game or two. Despite the outwardly cheery shell, she hides a deep-seated sense of inadequacy and insecurity about herself.
